Miami Hurricanes 2016-17 non-conference basketball schedule released

Miami will play all 12 pre-ACC games in the state of Florida, with eight of those games in the 305 area code.

The Hurricanes’ schedule includes seven games at the BankUnited Center and one game at AmericanAirlines Arena, as part of the Hoophall Miami Invitational.

UM also plays in Jacksonville (at North Florida) and Orlando (AdvoCare Invitational).

The strength of a team’s non-conference schedule matters when NCAA tournament bids are handed out, and UM cannot afford many early slip-ups with a tough ACC slate beginning in January.

The Hurricanes, who finished 13th in last year’s KenPom rankings, will need to play well in Orlando. That’s where they’ll get a game against Stanford (111th), a second game against either Iowa State (16th) or Indiana State (176th), and a third game against Gonzaga (18th), Seton Hall (22nd), Florida (41st) or Quinnipiac (297th).

George Washington (47th) is another potentially strong matchup for UM. The Colonials return leading scorer Tyler Cavanaugh but lose eight of their top 10 players.

Miami will need to handle its business against Columbia (110th), Wofford (185th), Western Carolina (188th), North Florida (189th), Penn (251st), South Carolina State (267th), Rutgers (291st) and Florida Atlantic (294th).
