Miami Hurricanes freshman WR Dionte Mullins cleared to play

Freshman wide receiver Dionte Mullins has been cleared to participate in football-related activities, Miami announced Thursday.

A source told The Post that Mullins will participate in Miami’s walk-through practice Thursday night and be present at UM’s full practice Friday morning.

A Miami spokesperson said Mullins had been given approval to play from both the NCAA Eligibility Center and UM.

Coach Mark Richt, who said earlier Thursday that Mullins was expected to be on the team, has remained positive about Mullins’ chances at qualifying.

A four-star recruit and All-American from Miami-Gulliver Prep, Mullins spent the summer attempting to qualify by taking online classes. He sat out his senior season at Gulliver because of academics.

The only game he has played since his junior year was the Under Armour All-American Game, in which he made a slick touchdown catch on a pass from fellow UM recruit Jack Allison. Mullins was ranked as high as No. 11 nationally at his position by ESPN.

Miami needs him badly, considering the state of their wide receiver position.

The Hurricanes have six healthy scholarship wide receivers. Sophomore Lawrence Cager is out for the year with a torn ACL. Freshman standout Ahmmon Richards is limited by turf toe.

Mullins, 5-foot-10 and 180 pounds, will likely compete for time in the slot (Y) or as a flanker (Z), behind Stacy Coley, Braxton BerriosSam Bruce and Malcolm Lewis. Dayall Harris and Darrell Langham are taking most of the reps at split end (X).

So what to expect from Mullins, who will wear No. 84? A UM source said the team doesn’t have sky-high expectations since Mullins missed so much time, arrived late, and hasn’t yet proven he can pick up the playbook. However, Miami lacks depth at his position,so he will be given ample chance to show his skills.

It’s unlikely Mullins will be permitted to speak to the media any time soon. Aside from media day (which was Aug. 8), UM true freshmen are typically prohibited from giving interviews until they play in a game.
