Miami Hurricanes start 2016 with three true freshmen at linebacker

For perhaps the first time in program history, Miami started the season with three true freshmen at linebacker.

Strong-side linebacker Zach McCloud, middle linebacker Shaq Quarterman and weak-side linebacker Michael Pinckney were announced as starters 15 minutes before kickoff against Florida A&M at remodeled Hard Rock Stadium. Pinckney earned the start over redshirt freshman Jamie Gordinier.

It’s possible Miami is the only team in the Power 5 conferences to start true freshmen at linebacker. (We’ll have to look at the lineups after this weekend to see if that’s true.)

Miami had a total of four true freshmen in its starting lineup. Wide receiver Ahmmon Richards, out of Wellington High, was the other. He earned the start along with senior Stacy Coley and junior Braxton Berrios.

Also of note, defensive end Trent Harris was announced as a starter. Harris broke his left hand last week and was fitted for a hard cast. Grad transfer cornerback Adrian Colbert earned the start over sophomore Sheldrick Redwine.
