Dewan Huell, the five-star forward from Miami Norland High and one of the most ballyhooed recruits in UM basketball history, was arrested on charges of battery Tuesday morning.

“I am aware of the reported incident involving Dewan Huell last night and we are still gathering information,” UM Athletics Director Blake James said in a statement. “I have very high expectations for all of our student-athletes, as I know coach [Jim] Larranaga does for his team, and any misconduct will be addressed.”

Larranaga said he was out of town recruiting and was still gathering information, but said he has been “very, very pleased” with Huell’s progress.

“He’s been terrific to work with, to be around,” Larranaga said. “I’ve been working with him individually and he’s been doing a terrific job.

“At some point today I expect that he and I will sit down and he’ll share with me what happened and we will react appropriately.”

According to WINZ-AM reporter Andy Slater, who obtained a police report, Huell, 19, walked into his ex-girlfriend’s dorm room at FIU, found her in the closet with another man. According to Slater, police said Huell attacked the man, grabbed him by his shirt and dragged him out of the room, leaving him with scratches on his neck and chest.

Huell, listed at 6-foot-11 and 220 pounds, was expected to be an early contributor when the Hurricanes’ season begins next month. He is the fourth UM recruit to play in the prestigious McDonald’s All-American game.

“I read Blake James’ [statement] and I agree with that,” Larranaga said. “We will address this, get it corrected and move forward.”
