If there were any concerns about Mark Richt‘s energy level at age 56, this video may allay them.
Miami, like many programs in this age of school-produced media, puts out some interesting behind-the-scenes videos. An episode of its “The U” series released Tuesday reviews UM’s first three games. It includes a passionate pregame speech from Richt about “swag,” delivered before Miami’s 45-10 win at Appalachian State 10 days ago.
The access is great and the production values are high, so the entire 11-minute video is worth a watch. If you don’t have the time, the speech begins at the 8:50 mark and lasts nearly a minute. Richt is heard (and then shown) speaking to players in the visiting locker room at Kidd-Brewer Stadium.
“Everybody talks about Miami having ‘swag,’” he said. “When I took this job, all they wanted to talk about [was], ‘Is Miami getting the swag back?’ I said, ‘You know what? Swag ain’t dancing to me. Swag ain’t saying, ‘I got a first down.’ Swag ain’t swaying before a kickoff and they run back to the 45-yard line.
“Swag,” he said, his voice rising from a shout to a holler, “is whipping the man on the other side of you. That’s what swag is. Swag is, when the game’s over, we win the game. That’s what swag is. I don’t care what the boys did in the past. The reason why it was swag is because they won. Not because they had some kind of antic.
“You understand what I’m saying?” he asked.
“Yes sir,” they replied.
“I’m counting on every one of you guys,” he said, “to whoop the man across from you, every single play. Your teammates are counting on you. Your coaches are counting on you. Your families are counting on you. Your ‘why’” – the goal every Hurricane writes down before the season as a reason they play the game – “is counting on you. You understand me?”
Mark Walton ran 80 yards for a touchdown on the first play, Miami went up by three touchdowns in the first quarter. There weren’t a lot of “antics” to be found.
