The last time Miami played a tournament in Hawaii, they went 1-2. But they wound up playing in the Sweet 16 at the end of the year.
The Hurricanes will hope for a better showing — and better season — when they play in the 2017 Diamond Head Classic. UM announced its inclusion into the tournament, which will be played Dec. 22-25, 2017, in Honolulu.
The field includes Akron, Davidson, Middle Tennessee, New Mexico State, USC, Utah State and host school Hawaii. Four of those teams — Miami, Middle Tennessee, USC and Hawaii — played in the 2016 NCAA tournament. Akron, Davidson and New Mexico State were in the NIT.
Miami’s last appearance in Hawaii, in the 2012-13 season, saw them beat Hawaii 73-58, but lose to No. 4 Arizona 69-50 and Indiana State 57-55 (in overtime).
This year’s Hurricanes (4-2), who lost to Florida 65-56 in the third-place game of the AdvoCare Invitational in Orlando, plays Rutgers (6-0) at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge. That game will be shown on ESPNU.
