Miami’s reloading in the secondary — and Jacksonville-area success — continued with the addition of Derrick Smith, a safety from the northern part of the state.

More about him:

Derrick Smith

Smith

Smith

Status: signed

Size: 6-3, 190

School: Jacksonville-Trinity

Stats: 52 tackles and three interceptions, plus two receiving touchdowns as a senior (Jacksonville Times-Union)

Stars: Three (247, Rivals, ESPN)

Rank: No. 77 athlete (ESPN), No. 115 wide receiver, 837th (247), not rated (Rivals)

Projection: Rotational safety or linebacker. Smith is a big hitter coming downhill and shows flashes of playmaking ability – tipping interceptions to himself, snatching balls from receivers – but he doesn’t have great speed, short-area quickness and change-of-direction. He’ll be best as a run-stopping safety and could grow into a linebacker, not unlike fellow Jacksonville native Darrion Owens.

Fun facts: Had several crunching hits and an interception in his team’s state title victory, the program’s fourth in a row … Chose Miami over Iowa State, UCLA, Colorado State and UCF … Wore No. 4 in high school.
