After a light year for the Hurricanes on preseason All-ACC teams — now-graduated punter Justin Vogel received most of the love — Miami appears to be a little more spotlight-worthy this summer.
Athlon Sports, which touts UM as a preseason No. 23 and put Mark Walton on one of its regional preview covers, projects five first-team All-ACC players from Miami. Clemson is the only other ACC program that has that many.
Athlon is one of many outlets that annually picks preseason All-ACC teams (and, in the interest of full disclosure: I get a vote, since I contribute to their magazine). The official All-ACC voting is announced next month, when the league hosts its annual media days in Charlotte.
Athlon named Walton, a junior, a first-team running back along with Georgia Tech’s Dedrick Mills. The second-teamers are Florida State’s Cam Akers and Jacques Patrick.
Sophomore receiver Ahmmon Richards, a freshman All-American last year and a fourth-team preseason All-American according to Athlon, was also a first-team All-ACC pick. Clemson’s Deon Cain is the other.
Senior tight end Chris Herndon was a first-teamer, ahead of Wake Forest’s Cam Serigne. UM also had two specialists on the first team, in the person of kicker Michael Badgley and punt returner Braxton Berrios.
Sophomore linebacker Shaq Quarterman made Athlon’s second team. Miami placed three on the third team: offensive lineman Kc McDermott, defensive tackle Kendrick Norton and defensive end Joe Jackson (the latter two chosen as defensive linemen, for what it’s worth).
With nine preseason All-ACC selections, the Hurricanes ranked fifth on Athlon’s list behind Clemson, FSU and Virginia Tech (12 each) and Pittsburgh (10). Duke also had nine.
