ESPN’s networks are televising a bonanza of high school football the week before the start of the college season, and like The Opening, it’ll have a Miami flavor to it.
The games of note from a Hurricanes perspective:
On Friday, Aug. 25, Fort Lauderdale-St. Thomas Aquinas will host St. John Bosco, from the Southern California suburb of Bellflower. Aquinas features defensive back Al Blades Jr., a Miami commit, and uncommitted receiver Elijah Moore, a Miami target. That game is 7 p.m. on ESPNU.
At 9 p.m. on ESPN, watch Las Vegas-Bishop Gorman High tight end Brevin Jordan play against Maryland powerhouse DeMatha. Jordan, a UM commit, is considered by 247Sports’ composite ratings to be the top tight end in the nation. His team — which beat St. Thomas Aquinas in triple overtime last year — is on a 54-game winning streak and has been ranked No. 1 in the nation the last three seasons by USA Today.
Late Saturday, Aug. 26, Florida all-star team IMG Academy, which is based in Bradenton, visits defending Arizona Class 6A champion Chandler High. IMG, which is loaded with Division I talent and might be able to hold its own against some junior colleges and lower-level schools, boasts the quarterback-receiver duo of Artur Sitkowski and Brian Hightower, both four-star UM commits. It will be the first career game for Daniel Faalele, a 6-foot-8, 400-pound Australian offensive tackle who is new to the sport but holds scholarship offers from Miami and numerous other top programs.
That game is 10:30 p.m. on ESPNU.
The other games on Saturday, Aug. 26:
- At noon, Oklahoma powerhouse Tulsa Union visits in-state foe Broken Arrow.
- At 3:30 p.m. (ESPNU), Saraland (Ala.) travels to Heard County (Ga.).
- At 7:30 p.m. (ESPN2), Bartram Trail (Fla.) heads to Cartersville (Ga.), which has the nation’s top-rated quarterback, Clemson commit Trevor Lawrence.
ESPN will televise one prep game Sunday, Aug. 27. Wayne (Ohio) visits Pine-Richland (Pa.) at 1:30 p.m.
