Mark Walton: Miami Hurricanes ‘can be great’ in 2017, N’Kosi Perry ‘hard to stop’

CORAL GABLES — No, the Hurricanes don’t have a quarterback yet. But Mark Walton is confident they’ll find one. He wants whomever gets the job to know this:

“I’m down with him,” he said. “Let’s go. Let’s play ball. We’ve got to win.”

All Miami’s quarterbacks — and coaches — are down with Walton, one of the top ballcarriers in the nation.

No current ACC running back rushed for more yards (1,117) or scored more touchdowns (14) last year. Only two had better receiving numbers (27 catches for 240 yards and a touchdown). He was named first-team preseason All-ACC, made the nationwide watch lists for the Doak Walker (top running back), Walter Camp and Maxwell (player of the year) trophies. rated him the No. 41 player in the country. With another stellar season, he could break Miami’s touchdown record, and then leave for the NFL Draft.

If this is his last college season, he’s motivated to go out on a high note.

“We’ve still got a lot to work on,” Walton said. “But looking ahead, man, we can be a great team. We’ve just got to put everything together. Everybody’s got to play hard and just do what we’ve got to do. Sky’s the limit for us.”

In this short video from the first week of Miami fall camp, the star junior running back weighs in on the team’s progress, the running back depth behind him, his role in the offense, the coaching staff, and the quarterbacks.

For the record: he wasn’t asked about Evan Shirreffs or Cade Weldon. He did comment that newcomer N’Kosi Perry can “put the ball on the money” and “it’s kind of hard to stop him.”

He’s also “looking forward to seeing [Malik Rosier] make plays for us too.”
