[Goals for this week: Narrow QB race, solidify depth chart]

CORAL GABLES — Michael Pinckney is back — we think.

The sophomore linebacker, who has been limited by a hamstring strain, was stretching with the team Monday. Pinckney spent most of Miami’s first two weeks of camp conditioning during the media viewing portion of practice.

Sophomore tight end Michael Irvin was practicing fully. He appears to be over his dehydration issues, but was running as the fourth-stringer behind senior Chris Herndon, sophomore walk-on Malik Curry and freshman Brian Polendey.

Star running back Mark Walton, who bruised his hip in the scrimmage according to Mark Richt, appeared to be full-go.

* The order of quarterbacks, in UM’s first practice following the scrimmage, was Malik RosierEvan Shirreffs, N’Kosi Perry and Cade Weldon. Rosier looked to be the most accurate of the group during QB-to-TE throwing drills. Perry and Weldon missed several throws.

It appears Rosier and Shirreffs are ahead in the race, with both showing the ability to run the offense and make accurate throws during Saturday’s scrimmage. Through they were during situational drills, Rosier’s three touchdowns can’t be ignored (he is, of course, the only quarterback on the roster who has thrown a pass for Miami in a real game). Neither he nor Shirreffs threw an interception in the scrimmage, and combined to go 18-of-28 for 313 yards and four scores. Shirreffs has been called steady by the coaches, though he’s not known to have the strongest arm.

As dynamic as he is, Perry probably needs to show significant improvement this week — especially in the area of dropbacks, decision-making and throwing accuracy — or risk falling out of the race. Richt said he wants to narrow down the contenders and give more reps to his top performers. Weldon has not been a factor.

A lengthy video of the quarterbacks to come later this morning.
