CORAL GABLES — The 2021 college football season will start with Miami and Alabama.
The teams will meet in Atlanta at Mercedes-Benz Stadium for the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game, televised by ESPN. The game was made official Tuesday.
Mississippi and Louisville could reportedly play in the same series in 2021.
Alabama, which has played in six of the last eight national championship games and won four, is 14-3 all-time against the Hurricanes. The teams last played in 1993 at the Sugar Bowl, when the second-ranked Crimson Tide upset the top-ranked Canes 34-13 in New Orleans. That broke Miami’s 29-game winning streak and gave Bama its first national title since 1979.
It was payback for the 1990 Sugar Bowl, which Miami won 33-25 to claim its fourth national crown.
Before that, UM lost 10 in a row to Bama between 1962 and 1979. The Tide was ranked in the top 5 of the Associated Press poll in six of those 10 games, and 16th or better in eight of 10. Miami was not ranked once.
UM lost its first three meetings (1941, ’47 and ’52) and took two straight from 1954-55. Aside from the 1990 Sugar Bowl, those are the Canes’ only two wins against the Tide.
