Miami Hurricanes recruiting: LB Patrick Joyner signs early

Patrick Joyner (247Sports)

On early signing day, Miami signed a former Florida State commit who flipped late to the Canes.

More about him:

Joyner

PATRICK JOYNER

Status: signed; plans to enroll in May

Size: 6-3, 212

School: Homestead-South Dade High

Stats: 18 sacks and 56 tackles as a junior (Hudl)

Stars: Four (ESPN), three (247, Rivals)

Rank: No. 23 outside linebacker (ESPN); No. 52 weak-side defensive end, No. 937 overall (247); not rated (Rivals)

Projection: Starting linebacker as an upperclassman. Joyner’s highlight tape shows him slicing through defensive lines as a stand-up rusher, showing a lot of pass-rush ability. He could thrive in that role, but needs work in coverage to be a three-down player. ESPN called him “fluid, athletic, long and explosive,” a “physical tackler with excellent range and ability to close quickly … Impressive athletic edge defender with the skills to play many spots. Fast, long and physical player with instincts to the ball.”

Fun facts: Committed to Florida State last April and flipped to UM in December … Offers from Alabama, Florida and several mid-level FBS programs … Jimbo Fisher’s departure from FSU was a catalyst for Joyner’s move, but Miami identified him as a must-get prospect in June … High school teammate of fellow UM signee DJ Ivey … Wore No. 8 on his official visit (as did Ivey) and in high school … Miami Herald first-team All-Dade selection … Hosted by Zach McCloud on his official visit.
