[Early signing day: Updates from around the state]

On early signing day, Miami signed an offensive lineman who may not wait long to compete for playing time.

More about him:

Campbell

JOHN CAMPBELL

Status: signed; plans to enroll in January

Size: 6-5, 295

School: Orlando-Dr. Phillips

Stats: N/A

Stars: Four (Rivals), three (247, ESPN)

Rank: No. 17 offensive tackle (Rivals); No. 35 offensive tackle (ESPN); No. 40 offensive tackle, No. 503 overall (247)

Projection: Rotational tackle sooner than later. The only returning tackle who has played a lot for UM is senior-to-be Tyree St. Louis, the starter on the right side. The quicker Campbell — who like most lineman entering college must get stronger — can get his playbook down, the better chance he has to compete with St. Louis, redshirt freshman Kai-Leon Herbert and others for time on the edge.

Fun facts: Had 45 offers when he committed to UM last July 3, including Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Georgia, LSU, Ohio State and South Carolina … Didn’t take an official visit to any school other than Miami … Wore No. 74 in high school, which is currently taken by senior-to-be Tyler Gauthier … Started at left tackle for Dr. Phillips beginning as a sophomore … Won Class 8A state title as a senior. It was his school’s first.
