MIAMI GARDENS — Thoughts from Mark Richt after a win over Syracuse:

* “For some reason we can’t find a way to play really good on both sides of the ball at the same time.  … It’d be nice to be more consistent.” Richt said it was an “inconsistent effort offensively, and defensively some bright spots.”

* He called Syracuse quarterback Eric Dungey “as tough as they come.”

* Two dropped balls by Ahmmon Richards “could have been two touchdowns in the first half.” Richards was “anxious to score,” Richt said.

* Miami isn’t dominant, which is what Richt wants. But the Hurricanes are “resilient,” he said.  “We won’t quit or panic or feel like all is lost.”

* “We had some bad decisions,” he said, like a substitution error that led to a 12-man call.  “Little things like that’ll get you beat.”

* Chris Herndon (10 catches, 96 yards, touchdown) “played a lot of snaps” and was “struggling” with a shoulder injury. After Herndon left the game, Richt said, UM called more four-wide plays, which worked out when Malik Rosier hit Jeff Thomas for a 48-yard touchdown.

* On the fourth-and-3 call, Richt said the field conditions were the reason he made the call to go for it (UM was unsuccessful). “Just slipping too much,” he said. “Bang it into the line, they scoop-and-score, and they’re having a party down there.”

* Homer’s 33-yard touchdown to put it away was an inside zone play that “we just tried to bang it away” and hope it broke.  It did. “Their defense was on-point,” Homer said.

* “There were moments, especially in the first half, where we had a couple touchdowns and we had to kick a couple field goals.” That, Richt said, “got me bent out of shape.”
